About WeGro
WeGro is an agri-fintech company built to give Bangladeshi smallholder farmers access to credit, agricultural inputs, and markets through a single technology platform. Mahmud Rahman co-founded the company in 2021 alongside Alvi Rahman, bringing a personal connection to agriculture rather than a purely analytical one to how the platform was designed.
Unlike many fintech founders, his connection to farming is rooted in childhood experience rather than something he discovered later through market research.
A Childhood Rooted in Farming
Mahmud Rahman grew up in a farming family and was shaped by traditional agricultural practices he observed during childhood visits to Feni. That early exposure to how smallholder farmers actually worked, and the constraints they operated under, stayed with him well into a corporate career that had little to do with agriculture at first.
He completed his Bachelor of Business Administration at East West University in Dhaka, graduating in 2015, before spending years in corporate roles unrelated to farming. That gap between his childhood exposure to agriculture and his eventual return to the sector as a founder spanned nearly a decade of business experience in entirely different industries.
Six Years Learning Business Before Farming
Before returning to agriculture as a founder, Mahmud Rahman spent roughly six years working across a range of companies, including Robi, ACI, Reckitt Benckiser, British American Tobacco, and Sindabad.com, along with a stint at the agri-focused startup Khaas Food. Those roles gave him experience in business development, territory management, and trade marketing across very different industries.
That corporate grounding, particularly the time at Khaas Food, put him back in direct contact with Bangladesh's agriculture sector and eventually connected him with his future co-founder, Alvi Rahman.
A First Attempt That Didn't Survive the Pandemic
Mahmud Rahman's first direct venture into agriculture was investing in a cattle farm, followed by launching a startup called Goshat in 2019. Goshat ran into serious operational hurdles once the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and market access, an early setback that shaped how he approached his next venture.
Rather than walking away from agriculture after that setback, Mahmud Rahman used the experience to sharpen his understanding of exactly where smallholder farmers needed the most support, insight that directly informed WeGro's later design. Losing a business to a supply-chain shock, rather than reading about one secondhand, gave him a firsthand appreciation for why insurance and reliable credit mattered as much to farmers as access to markets alone.
Founding WeGro
In 2021, Mahmud Rahman partnered with Alvi Rahman, whom he had met at Khaas Food, to co-found WeGro. The company set out to solve a specific, persistent problem for Bangladeshi farmers: unreliable access to affordable credit, quality inputs, and stable markets, all bundled into a single platform rather than solved piecemeal.
Under Mahmud Rahman's leadership, WeGro has grown to serve more than 20,000 farmers across Bangladesh, providing credit, agricultural inputs, and insurance solutions built specifically around smallholder needs rather than adapted from urban lending models.
Where WeGro Stands Today
Mahmud Rahman continues to lead WeGro's expansion, drawing on both his own farming-family background and the operational lessons of an earlier failed venture to shape a company built for resilience in a sector where market shocks, like the pandemic disruption that ended Goshat, remain a constant risk. The company secured seed funding from Accelerating Asia in June 2023, capital that has supported its growth to more than 20,000 registered farmers.
As one of the more compact agri-fintech teams profiled in this directory, WeGro has kept its focus narrow and farmer-specific, building credit and insurance products designed around smallholder cash flows rather than adapting products built for a different customer base.
Products
WeGro's platform centers on farmer-focused financial services rather than a single packaged product.
Farm Credit is WeGro's core offering, giving smallholder farmers access to affordable financing built around their specific cash flow needs.
Agricultural Input Access extends the platform to connect farmers with quality inputs alongside credit.
Insurance Solutions round out WeGro's offering, protecting smallholder farmers against the kind of market shocks that ended Mahmud Rahman's earlier venture, Goshat.
Across credit, input access, and insurance, WeGro's platform reflects the resilience-focused approach that has defined the company since its 2021 founding, now serving more than 20,000 farmers across Bangladesh.
