M. Mahboob Zaman founded the company in 1998, at a time when computer use in Bangladesh was still in its early stages and software exports were barely an industry.

His path into enterprise software followed an earlier chapter most founders in the sector don't share: service as a freedom fighter in Bangladesh's 1971 Liberation War, decades before he built one of the country's founding software companies.

Starting With Tk 10 Lakh in Capital

M. Mahboob Zaman started DataSoft with only Tk 10 lakh in paid-up capital, a modest sum even by the standards of the time. That early capital discipline shaped the cautious, deliberate way the company grew in its first years, building toward large-scale, mission-critical systems for banks, ports, and government-linked institutions rather than smaller consumer software.

Rather than chase consumer software or short-term contract work, M. Mahboob Zaman steered DataSoft toward complex, regulated sectors: port and logistics management, banking and microfinance systems, and bioinformatics. That focus meant slower, harder sales cycles than building apps for a mass market, but it also meant DataSoft built deep, defensible expertise that few local competitors could easily replicate.

Reaching CMMI Level 5

Under M. Mahboob Zaman's leadership, DataSoft became CMMI Level 5 certified, a process-quality standard that helped the company win joint venture contracts with partners in the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Japan, and Italy. Those are markets that typically demand process rigor before handing over critical systems work to an outside vendor, and the certification gave DataSoft a credibility marker few Bangladeshi software firms of the era could match.

That standard has stayed part of how DataSoft positions itself decades later, even as the regulated systems it builds have expanded well beyond the banking and port logistics work that first established the company.

Expanding Into Hardware With DMA

In 2017, nearly two decades after founding DataSoft, M. Mahboob Zaman launched DMA, DataSoft Manufacturing & Assembly, extending the group's work from pure software into hardware manufacturing and assembly. It was a deliberate broadening of what had started as a software-only business, reflecting a longer-term view of where Bangladesh's technology sector was heading.

DMA runs a dedicated manufacturing facility at HiTech Park in Kaliakoir, about 36 kilometers outside Dhaka, producing solar-powered laptops, mini PCs, and printed circuit boards under a "Made in Bangladesh" positioning. M. Mahboob Zaman serves as DMA's Chairman while Hasan Rahman runs day-to-day operations as Managing Director, a leadership split that lets M. Mahboob Zaman oversee both companies without running either one's daily operations alone.

A Voice for the Industry

M. Mahboob Zaman has also served as a former president of the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services, giving him a role in shaping the country's broader software policy conversations, not just running his own company. He has spoken publicly about the shift toward machine-to-machine interaction in everyday technology, a small illustration of how far the industry has moved since he started DataSoft with a paid-up capital of Tk 10 lakh in 1998.
